The effects of polythene mulch and nitrogen fertilizer on nitrogen fixation of nodules in peanut were studied with high-yielding peanut cv. Luhuall from 1997 to 1999 in the campus and experimental farm of Shandong Agricultural University, Taian, China. The main results were as follows. Polythene mulch peanut was advantageous to rhizobium infection and nodule formation, and caused nodule form and fix nitrogen early. Polythene mulch decreased the nitrogenase activity(NA) of peanut before pod setting phase, but increased the nitrogenase activity after pod setting phase, and delayed the senescence of nodule, prolonged the period of nodule nitrogen fixation. Applying N fertilizer on peanut inhibited nitrogenase activity in nodules, mainly reduced the rhizobium infection and nodule formation. These inhibitory effects occurred chiefly before pod setting phase, and weakened gradually with the growth and development of peanut. Top-dressing N fertilizer at different phases all inhibited NA, but the inhibitory effects got more severe and longer with the earlier application, and got less severe and shorter with the later application. Compared with open-field cultivation, polythene mulch cultivation of peanut absorbed more amounts of fertilizer nitrogen and soil nitrogen before pod setting phase, but could mainly depend on the nodule nitrogen fixation for providing nitrogen nutrition after pod setting phase.
