Assessment of Salinity Tolerance in Segregation Generations of Wheat Crosses

Three segregation generations were derived from crosses between four intermediate salt tolerant bread wheats, Triticum aestivum L., namely Tobari 66, Lu26.s, Ho2, and Siete Cerros, and screened for more salt tolerant genotypes allowing germination and emergence at 350 mM NaCl (35.05 dS/m). The selection intensity achieved was of the order of 0.29-0.25 in these segregation populations (17-19 seedlings from 7000 seeds). The comparison of salt tolerant hybrid individuals and their parents was carried out in a hydroponic experiment applying six NaCl concentrations, 150, 200,225, 250,275 and 300 mM for hybrid plants, and two concentrations, 150 and 200 mM NaCl for parents. Shoot and root length of two-week-old seedlings were measured to assess tolerance. Both root and shoot lengths of hybrid plants were longer than parents (except Tobari 66) indicating more tolerance to NaCl. It may be assumed that this character is QTL based, and that the parents of such hybrids contain different genes for tolerance.
