Genetic Improvement in Brinjal (Solanum Melongena L.) Through Biparental Approach

Biparental progenies (BIP's) were developed in F_2 generations of two intervarietal crosses using the approach suggested by Comstock and Robinson (1948 and 1952). The plants used in matings were also selfed to develop F_3 progenies. Phenotypic variability in general, as revealed by the coefficient of variation was greater in BIP's as compared to F_3 families (with few exceptions) in both the crosses for all the traits. The analysis of variance of biparental progenies and F_3 families showed significant differences among the progenies for all the traits in both the crosses. The coefficient of variation and better mean performance of the biparentai progenies and in some cases more coefficient of variation in F_3 progenies suggest that they are useful in breaking the platueau effect and undesirable linkages and can be used profitably in breeding programmes.
