Organic farming provides sustainable environmental, economic and social outcomes. Studies have consistently found that organic systems are environmentally sustainable. Organic agriculture helps to reduce greenhouse gases by converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into soil organic matter. Studies in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe show that the best organic farms can have higher yields than conventional farms. Organic farms spend less on imported chemicals and more on labour and other locally supplied inputs than conventional farms. Published studies comparing the income of organic farms with conventional farms have found that the net income is similar. Two independent studies show that organic food contains much higher vitamin and mineral contents than conventionally farmed food. Organic food has no toxic chemical residues. There is a growing body of published scientific evidence showing a range of adverse health and environmental effects that are caused by agricultural chemicals. A shift to organic farming would see improved rural environments, economic stimulation and better social outcomes in rural communities.
