Purpose: The clarification of viscosity characteristics of aqueous polymer gel under mechanical shearing is important for formulation design of gel and emulsion dosage forms in cosmetic and pharmaceutical field. This study was focused on the clarification of viscosity change of aqueous SGL gel by an agitating homogenizer and a microfluidizer. Methods: Homogenizer as a medium mechanical shearing machine and microfluidizer as an extremely mechanical high shearing one were used, respectively. The viscosity of SGL gel was investigated by treating with respective shearing, that is revolution speed/operation time in homogenizer's case and operation pressure/passing time in case of microfluidizer's one. Carboxyvinylpolymer was used for comparison. Results: It was found that the viscosity of SGL gel was stable under medium mechanical shearing by a homogenizer. Viscosities under extremely high shearing by a microfluidizer were decreased; however the decrease level of viscosity might be tolerable to prepare nano-emulsion dosage form. On the other hand, CVP gel is unstable in viscosity under medium and high shearing.
