In modeling the behavior of porous media it is crucial to characterize the interactions occurring on the interfaces between constituents. A continuum theory of multiphase porous media that is capable of dealing with these interactions is presented. The key component of this theory is the implementation of the dynamic compatibility conditions on the interfaces that microscopically represent the pressure jumps across the interfaces. The proposed theory is used to develop a purely macroscale model whose state parameters are measurable in experiments. By virtue of Biot's principle of virtual dissipation, a link between he mixture theory-based models and Biot's theory of porous media is established.
