The quality of a workpiece is usually influenced by a wide set of process parameters and properties of the material and the geometry. Here, the laser sintering technique - a manufacturing technique for prototypes - is chosen as an example. For this process, optimised parameters, such as scan speed or laser power, must be determined. These parameters significantly influence the quality properties, e.g. hardness, geometric tolerances etc. But, these quality properties cannot be satisfied simultaneously. For example, the requirements on hardness and tolerances are contradictory to each other. In order to use the knowledge gained in past productions for optimised process design, a knowledge based approach is applied. A fuzzy rule system will be introduced which is capable to incorporate complex dependencies between process parameters and desired workpiece properties. This requires to extend the rule system by arithmetic terms. Moreover, a hybrid inference algorithm which needs the evaluation of rules as well as arithmetic expressions is designed to make this knowledge applicable for optimised process design.
