Several approaches to distributed measurement and control are explored in which artificial intelligence capabilities are combined with automated equipment control environments. Some of the potential benefits of these approaches are identified along with the necessary features and functionality of the infrastructure required to support the proposed approach to distributed measurement and control (DMC). An overview of the Interactive Electronics Laboratory (IEL) and the Measurement Request Broker (MRB) architecture is presented since this has formed the basis for many of the concepts to be discussed. Operating the IEL, which uses the MRB system, has been an important test bed for investigating DMC. It has served not only as a proof-of-principle for the distance laboratory concept, but also has helped identify the required features of following generation systems and has helped clarify some of the enabled possibilities.
