PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF FRP REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS UNDER SOFT IMPACT LOAD

The behavior of FRP reinforced concrete slabs under impact loading is analytically studied by applying a nonlinear dynamic layered finite element method. The accuracy of the analysis is verified by comparisons with test results on full scale slabs. Two different types of carbon based FRP rods are used as reinforcements in normal strength and also high strength concrete specimen slabs. Consequently, the analysis is found to be capable of predicting the ultimate response and also impact failure modes of the various slabs. Finally, performance of different types of concrete slabs under impact loading is analytically evaluated based on the following indices; impact load at failure, deflection at failure, cracking load, volume displaced and impact failure mode. The evaluation results point out the optimal combinations of concrete and reinforcement materials suitable for impact loading conditions.
