Theoretical basis of the new approach to the assessment of the compression flanges of existing steel railway bridges is briefly described in this paper. The so-called strut approach is used o respect some arrangement specifications of steel railway bridges. The main formulate for checking of the compression plate flanges are presented. Strut buckling factor of stiffener- plate column, its imperfection factor and influence of the global buckling of compression flanges are investigated in this paper.
