This paper deals with the coupled instability problems of structural members or structures, i.e., local and overall interaction buckling problems. For overall buckling, only the so-called Euler type flexural buckling is considered. In this paper, the approximate formulas for the coupled buckling strengths of columns, beamcolumns, beams and planar frames are presented. At the same time, their comparisons with test results will be discussed together with the design philosophy for these structural members. Moreover, an attempt is made in the following discussion to represent the strength formulas as functions of the residual stresses and initial geometrical imperfections.
