RESEARCH ON THE SCOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE SEDIMENT IN ESTUARY

The scour characteristics of fine sediment in an estuary are related to sediment properties and consolidation time. It is difficult to predict the scour of fine sediment. In this study flume, experiments have been done in order to simulate the scour process of fine sediment after experienced different consolidation time, the mean particle size was 0.07mm and the range of varied consolidation time was one year. Experimental results show that: the riverbed resistance to scour was related to consolidation time, on the condition of the homological hydrodynamic force, the riverbed resistance to scour increased with consolidation time and the scour rates decreased during the course of consolidation; and meantime, the scour rate was also related to the dry unit weight during the consolidation process. When the dry unit weight of fine sediment increased and reached a stable value after long time, the scour rate decreased and also approached the stable state, which presented different scour characteristics that depended on consolidation time. On the other hand, based on the analysis of the experiment results and considering the basic theory of sediment movement, introducing the scour coefficient to express the law of riverbed resistance to scour following consolidation time, the simplified scour rate formula was established. In this scour rate formula the factor of hydrodynamic force and the factor of sediment resistance to scour were also included. By comparison with the field data, the calculation result was closely fitted with the measured data in the same flow situation and good agreements were achieved. It shown since the effects of different consolidation time were considered during the process of scour, the variations of scour characteristics with consolidation time were well reflected in the scour rate formula of fine sediment.
