Human visual or auditory modality always takes a lot of information at the same time. Selective attention enables us to focus awareness on objects and events that are relevant to our immediate goals. We assumed the selective attention is realized in inferior parietal lobule (IPL). In this study, in order to clarify the mechanism of the human selective attention, we measured the fMRI BOLD signals using the noise image/sound presentation tasks. The results showed the areas in the IPL related to the function of the human selective attention for both of the visual and the auditory inputs. The results also suggested that the suppression of brain activity is important to the function. Furthermore, this experimental results is significant to elucidate that the suppression of the fMRI BOLD signal relate to the human functional activity.
