Laboratory evaluation of thermal protective performance run the gamut from bench top tests on fabric swatches to full scale assessment of garment performance using an instrumented manikin. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages with regard to the information provided, and practical considerations involved in the implementation of the testing procedure. This paper focuses on the TPP and instrumented manikin tests as means of evaluating the thermal protective performance of materials and garments.
