Endothermies is the absorption of thermal energy by a chemical reaction. During an endothermic chemical reaction, temperature rise at a specified temperature is stopped, reduced or delayed. Endothermic chemistry in the form of a COMPOSITE FABRIC ENDOTHERMIC MATERIAL (CFEM) was successfully demonstrated and applied to the protection of satellites from 2000 watt/sq cm IR LASERS and near nuclear incidents. As part of the Defensive Shields Program conducted by the U.S. Air Force, this CFEM absorbed 34K cal/gm of endotherm. This greatly enhanced the survivability of the protected satellites. In 1993, Hayes applied endothermies to a Flight Data Recorder (Black Box) manufactured by Smiths Industries. The new Black Box technology resulted in a system that operated twice as long at half the temperature of the original device while maintaining the same footprint and size. This paper presents efforts to apply endothermies in the form of a film to protective fabrics. The applications include but are not limited to Fire Suits, Flight Suits, Dive Suits, Cold Weather Protection and Heat signature suppression.
