Research related to the Lightweight Chemical Protective Clothing Program for the Canadian Forces (CF) has focused on reducing thermal load and optimizing operational effectiveness of soldiers wearing chemical and biological (CB) protective ensembles in hot climates. To investigate the effects of wear on lightweight barrier materials, 50 garments in three material configurations were exposed to operational wear during military field exercises. A Post Wear Assessment Protocol was developed to qualitatively and quantitatively measure critical properties of wear. The process for documenting wear on the materials and the structural features of the garments provided a useful tool to assess performance of prototype garments. While laboratory investigations provided valuable information on textiles during the down-selection process, the degradation due to wear could not be predicted. The wear assessment revealed that one of the barrier materials degraded beyond acceptable levels for agent penetration and only one of the two outer layers maintained its integrity during a twelve day wear trial.
