Divergence Analysis in Rice as Influenced by Azotobacter chroococcum

35 rice genotypes ― 18 indigenous types, 13 high yielding or recommended varieties and 4 stable mutant lines, were used for the comparative study on genetic divergence with two different approaches : 1) 21 days' old seedlings were inoculated with the bacterial strain ― Azotobacter chroococcum before transplanting, and 2) the seedlings were transplanted without inoculation. The study was made on the basis of 18 different characters including seed parameters and amylose content. Azotobacter chroococcum who able to influence the divergence analysis through micro-environmental change in root rhizosphere of rice genotypes. The reduction in number of clusters as well as reductidn in D~2 values for both intra-and inter-cluster distances, after seedling inoculation confirmed the influence of A. chroococcum. The responsiveness of the genotypes towards inoculum could also be confirmed through the change / variation in average performance of different clusters after seedling inoculation. Intercrossing amongst member genotypes of different clusters having high average performance of some local genotypes were expected to produce promising segregants for seed yield/plant in both the inoculated and uninoculated situation. But for larger and finer grains, inclusion of Kumargore : M and Masuri / Gobindobhog was expected to generate desirable recombinants / restructured genotypes.
