Sustainable Agriculture ― A New Initiative in West Bengal Perspective

In the North Indian Plains, West Bengal, as a partition state, notwithstanding its several physiographic, geographic and demographic shortcomings, has managed somehow to produce food grains for sustaining the burgeoning pressure of population. Traversing through the various five year plan period, a trend in plataeuing of productivity of various crops have been observed and it's apprehended that a possible food crisis may be envisaged in the coming decades unless the present rate of food grains production (nearly 4%) can't be augmented to 7-8% agricultural growth per annum. Thus in the quest of accelerated food production, large scale disparities viz. tapering of genetic diversity in most of the agricultural crops, ecological imbalance etc. have been cropped up. Despite technological breakthrough, agriculture in West Bengal is markedly influenced by weather. Rather it is subjected to Nature's vagaries. Each year, natural calamities take a huge toll of Agril. Production. In this context sustainable agriculture, unless its entire component's are not coordinated efficiently, might become a fallacy rather than being a possibility. Thus it has become compulsion to integrate ecology with agricultural system in order to tailor the need for maintenance a steady growth rate in Agricultural Production. Integration of different components of sustainable crop production viz. biodiversity through exploitation of modern Biotechnology, Hybrid technology, Biological management for maintenance of soil health, integrated nutrient and pest management into a synergistic production system should be the ultimate motto of the Agricultural Scientists.
