The data pertaining to first lactation milk yield per day of lactation length (FLY/LL) collected from 512 Hariana cows, progeny of 20 sires maintained at Government Livestock Farm, Hisar during a period of 20 years (1974-93) were utilized to estimate and compare the sire's breeding values estimated by three methods viz., ordinary least-squares (OLS), regressed least-squares (RLS) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). The same model was used for all the three procedures which included period and, season of calving as fixed effects, age at first calving as covariable and sire as random effect. Rank and product moment correlations among estimated sire merit obtained from OLS and RLS methods were high and significant indicating that these two methods are more or less similar for ranking of sires. OLS and RLS estimates of breeding value had negative rank and product moment association with estimates of breeding values obtained from BLUP. When comparison was made on the basis of coefficient of kurtosis, BLUP was the best method of sire evaluation while it was the second best when rest of the two criteria was considered. RLS cannot be recommended due to computational difficulty though coefficient of skewness and kurtosis obtained from the estimates of breeding value were close to normal distribution. It is recommended to use BLUP procedure in a situation where correct ratio of residual to sire variances is known. Use of OLS is recommended in a situation where correct ratio of residual to sire variances is unknown.
