A preliminary field study was initiated during 1992 through 1994 to evaluate 206 breeding lines for Orobanche resistance. Only one line (667/153/87) was found to be resistant to Orobanche, This line was further evaluated compared with three resistant and two susceptible cultivars in replicated trials on farmers' fields in Middle and Upper Egypt during 1995 through 1998. Results showed clearly that the new developed line had the least Orobanche spike number/in~2, producing slightly higher seed yield/ha compared with the resistant checks but exceeded the two susceptible ones by 136.4%. Accordingly, in 1999 this line was demonstrated on farmers' fields. In May 2001, it has been released as a new resistant cultivar to Orobanche under the name of 'Misr 1'.
