The wastewater needs of Mesquite New Mexico, a colonia, are serviced by a septic tank effluent pumped (STEP) collection systems and a subsurface flow constructed wetlands. Because this system has a groundwater discharge permit the regulated parameter of interest is total nitrogen. This is also the public health parameter of interest. This wastewater treatment plant, which is four+ years old, has never been in compliance with its nitrogen permit. There is to little oxygen in the system to allow effective nitrification, and without nitrification, the wetlands cannot denitrify. It has been shown by this group that if the nitrification can be achieved, this system will denitrify. The airlift pump study has demonstrated that total nitrogen of sub 10 mg/L can be achieved continuously in this climate. The modified cell continues to provide excellent nitrification/denitrification inspite of a 2-week shutdown period, temperatures below 10 degrees C, and an increase of loading up to 5x as great average loadings.
