The contribution of reeds (Phragmites australis), to the biodegradation of organic matter in wastewaters and the mechanisms involved were investigated using a set of fifteen 68 dm~3 gravel-based vertical flow constructed wetlands. The treatments included constructed wetlands planted-up with live reeds dead reeds and ones with live reeds with the surface of the substratum sealed. These were compared to controls which had no reed and ones similar to the controls but where air was actively pumped into the substratum. Each of the treatments was replicated three times and each system had an interstitial volume of 25 dm~3. The wastewater contained of glucose and various inorganic solutes and was supplied continuously over a 12 month period at a rate of 20 dm~3 m~(-2) day~(-1). The constructed wetlands with live reeds removed 78% of the supplied COD as glucose at a concentration of lg dm~(-3), of which 56% is due to diffusion of oxygen directly through the surface of the substratum. However, the removal of ammonium and phosphate was lower than expected at 52% and 48% in the systems with live reeds. There were large seasonal effects on the removal of COD, nitrate and phosphate by reed based treatment systems, whilst there was less of a seasonal effect in actively aerated systems. It is estimated that reeds supply 4.3 g O_2 m~(-2) day~(-1) to the substratum.
