A unidirectional continuous carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite was subjected to a cyclic stress in the direction perpendicular to the fiber direction. The applied stress was transferred to the incorporated fiber through the matrix. This stress causes a strain in the crystalline regions of carbon fiber, which appeared as the shift in the equatorial X-ray diffraction peak position. The stress on the incorporated fiber was calculated by multiplying the crystal strain and the crystal modulus of inter-graphite networks. We propose here a novel technique "X-ray Diffraction Method" to detect the stress on the incorporated fiber in the composite under a transverse load in situ and non-destructively, and discuss the stress transfer from microscopic point of view. The adhesion between the matrix and the fiber was found to play an important role for the transverse reinforcement of the composite.
