Fatty amines are widely used as collectors in the flotation of non-sulfide minerals. It is believed that at higher pH and/or higher concentration precipitation of the collector colloid as free amine may occur at the surface of the floated mineral. In the present work, we studied the wetting characteristics of the dodecylamine, hexadecylamine and octadecylamine surfaces at pH 6.4 and pH 9.0 using the sessile drop and captive bubble techniques. An increase in hydrophobicity with time was observed for each amine. Additionally, the FTIR thin film transmission spectra for these amines were taken as a function of time. Evident changes in the intensity and frequency of characteristic bands, especially NH vibrations were observed. Based on the contact angle and FTIR results it was concluded that hydrocarbon chain rearrangement associated with recrystallization took place at the surface during contact with the air. In order to examine the changes in these surface features, AFM images were collected. The most significant changes caused by crystal growth were observed at the dodecylamine surface. Moreover, the microscopic roughness was highest for the dodecylamine surface.
