The aim of the paper is to study the presence of heavy metals and arsenic in soils and plants in areas affected by mercury mining and metallurgical works, induced by anthropogenic additions mainly related to the lixiviation of ores and wastes, their geological dispersions in the selected area of study, and environmental impact assesment.. In the area of "El Terronal" (Asturias northern Spain), a large amount of tailings was disposed during years at the bottom of the valley as results of the mining and metallurgical processes corresponding to the ore deposit of La Pena - El Terronal. After the close down of the mine in 1974, the tailings were left on the valley where weathering processes result in dissolution of heavy metals and arsenic. Mercury mining and metallurgical activities have an important impact in this area, reflected by elevated concentrations of mercury and arsenic in soils and plants.
