A Study of Crack-tip Deformation Fields in PMMA under Mixed-mode Loading

A stereo vision is applied to measure the full three-dimensional deformation field around the crack tip region of the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen made of PMMA subjected to mixed mode (I/II) loading. Through coordinate transformation, the measured displacement fields were converted to the radial and circumferential displacements, U_r and U_theta, relative to an erected specimen ccoordiante system. Using the experimentally determined displacement components, U_r and U_theta, and the corresponding analytically determined displacements with several higher order terms include,d the stress intensity factors (K_I and K_(II)) and the amount of rigid body translation and rotation of the specimen are calculated simultaneously through the least-squares method. Using the estimated rigid body translation and rotation, the effect of the rigid body motion on the in-jplane displacements, u and v, was eliminated. Since the PMMA is a linear elastic material, the J integral values are evaluated using the experimentally determined in-plane displacements along several contours surrounding the crack tip. It is noted that the J integral values are calculated based on the plane stress condition. Also the J integral values are obtained by K_i and K_(II).
