Images obtained from the automated reflection polariscope, PSIOS (Phase Stepped Images Observed Simultaneously) based on principles of phase stepping contain noise. Experiments were carried out to find the major sources of noise in the use of the system. It is found that noise is caused mainly by the photoelastic coating and the electronic instrumentation; the majority of noise is in the high frequency domain. Several smoothing methods for full-field automated photoelasticity were reviewed. The zero phase, third order, low pass Butterworth filter was found to be the best to eliminate noise in the intensity data in images for a real component in dynamic loading conditions.
