Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was applied to measure interlaminar shear strains in fiber reinforced polymer composites. The strain field of short-beam shear test specimens was characterized. E-glass / vinyl ester laminates fabricated by the resin infusion molding process were utilized. The laminates were reinforced with four layers of multidirectional stitched fabric with CSM backing. Images of side surfaces of the specimens during the shear test were acquired using a high-resolution digital camera. Displacements of selected points on the surface of the specimens were measured by comparing their images with images of unloaded specimens using DIC principles. From the displacement field shear strains were calculated using finite element interpolation techniques. The experimental results indicate that the method can discriminate regions of strain concentrations. Then, direct measurements of shear strain distributions, in regions that minimize spurious strain effects, are possible. The DIC method is amiable for automation leading to enhancements in interlaminar shear characterization.
