An importatn link in determing what controls the fracture of materials cna be found in the way external loading forces interact with the microstructure of the material. Experimental measurement of displacements at the microstructural level has proved to be a very useful tool in determining the relationship between fracture properties and the microstructural elements of the material. A machine vision implementation of the stereoimaging technique for measuring displacements and computing three elements of the symmetric strain tensor is described briefly, and illustrations are given of the use of the technique in examining material fracture.
