The stress-strain relationships of high-strength concrete under uniaxial compression have been investigated by using either axial strain or circumferential strain as control signal. The stress-strain curves obtained by axial or circumferential strain control are compared to each other and their differences studied. It was found that the latter control method is much more stable and could be used to obtain the complete stress-strain curves of high-strength concrete, including the descending branch. Moreover, based on test data obtained by circumferential control, an empirical equation is presented to generate the complete stress-strain relationship of high-strength concrete in compression. The empirical equation has been found to give a good representation of the test data.
