The stress distribution in the thread of a bolt loaded by a not has been evaluated using photoelasticity and the finite element method. The technique of three-dimensional stress freezing was used to evaluate the stresses in a nut and bolt connection experimentally. The results from the experimental analysis were used to validate the finite element models and to ascertain the important characteristic of the models. Two finite element models were created, replicating the nut thread run-out in different ways. The results from the model in which the nut thread ended suddenly showed very poor correlation with the photoelastic results, but when the nut thread tapered gradually, a much better correaltion was achieved.
