Research and development (R&D) work on fission gas release (FGR) is still going on, despite constant and great efforts made since the end of the 60s to identify the mechanisms of FGR, to develop appropriate modelling and to provide reliable fuel designs. Driving forces for pursuing FGR studies today are mainly consequences of the situation raised by the high burn-up achievement objectives that are discussed in this paper.
