MERIS images have proven to be a valuable tool forrnmonitoring chlorophyll a on the Galician (NW Spain)rncoastal area, which is periodically affected byrnupwelling events usually related to harmful algaernblooms. The chlorophyll-a distribution, includingrnmonthly anomalies, was analysed from 9 years ofrnMERIS data (2003-2012) for this area. Regionallyrntuned algorithms (Regional neural network for riasrnBaixas or NNRB), developed and tested in previousrnworks by the authors of this study, were applied to thisrnlong series of MERIS images for the retrieval ofrnchlorophyll a. Given that Galician waters arernconsidered as optically complex, a fuzzy c-meanrnclustering technique (FCM) was first applied tornreflectance data in order to define the zones wherernNNRB produces reliable results. The relationship ofrnMERIS chlorophyll a data with upwelling events andrnharmful algae blooms was also discussed. This workrnwas developed in the framework of the projectrnPURGADEMAR, which aims to develop anrnoperational monitoring system for Pseudo-nitzschiarnblooms in the Galician rias.
