Coastal zones comprise a large variety of water typesrnwith different optical properties ranging from clear tornvery turbid waters with a light penetration depth of onlyrna few centimetres or to waters with high concentrationsrnof organic substances, which makes the water nearlyrnblack. For remote sensing of this variety of water typesrnand for determining the water constituents or opticalrnproperties from MERIS data we have compared threernapproaches: a neural network algorithm, which wasrntrained with the reflectances of all water types, a quasirnanalytical algorithm and a classification of water typesrncombined with a dedicated NN for each water type.
