A combined analysis of satellite imagery data,rnmeasurements of biotic and abiotic parameters andrnmixed effects modelling was used to study Pseudonitzschiarnblooms in the optically complex surfacernwaters of two Galician (NW Spain) rias (embayments),rnsites of extensive mussel culture. A regionally/clusterspecificrnchlorophyll a (chla) algorithm for MediumrnResolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) wasrnapplied to a series of images where in-situ data werernavailable. Three periods were considered which werernlinked with the dominant meteorological conditions offrnthe rias. The application of a regional algorithm inrncombination with the characteristics of MERIS FRrnallowed for accurate mapping of chla and the detectionrnof high in chla and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. ―patches‖ inrnthe rias. The optimal model for the Pseudo-nitzschiarnspp. abundance and DA concentration suggested thernsignificant effect of some macronutrients as well asrnother abiotic and biotic parameters, approximating inrnthat way the potential environmental causes and effectsrnof the harmful Pseudo-nitzschia spp. blooms in thernarea. Moreover, MERIS FR data and regionallyrnspecific algorithms showed that they can providernvaluable information about the blooms and should bernan integral part of the monitoring programs.
