Polarization Dependence of SFG Spectra of H/C(100) Surface

Vibrational spectra of hydrogen terminated diamond C(100)-2 x 1 surfaces were studied by sum-frequency generation (SFG) method. Two broad spectral peaks were observed in addition to sharp peaks corresponding to CH symmetric and antisymmetric modes (HC-CH species). The polarization characteristics of the broad peaks were different from those of the vibrational resonance peaks. The origin of these peaks is discussed. The SFG spectra of rough H/C(100)-2 x 1 surfaces were also measured and the results are compared to those of smooth H/C(100)-2 x 1 surfaces.
