Within the last decade ceramic scintillators have been developed with improved properties compared to single crystal scintillators. Among the considered material systems, gadolinium oxysulfide ceramics activated with trivalent praseodymium gives an advantageous high intrinsic X-ray to light conversion efficiency, short decay time and low afterglow for ultra fast X-ray imaging applications. Both quanities, efficiency and afterglow indicate that the disordered regions of the grain boundaries in the ceramic host are not restricting as generally expected. By such ceramic scintillators luminescence-basd solid state X-ray detectors have been reintroduced for X-ray sampling in medical computed tomography (CT). By the use of the specifically tailored gadolinium oxysulfide based ceramics developed at siemmens, ultra fast, high efficiency, low noise CT-detectors are acieved resulting in outstanding image quality. Due to the fact that no afterglow correction of the measured data is needed a reduction of the patient dose up to 30
