Increasing interest in the field state upconversion lasres as well as solid state color displays has stimulated investigations on the upconverted emissions coming from the higher excited levels of Tm, Er or Ho: (Tm) 791 and 478 nm; (Er) 406 and 540 nm; (Ho) 548 and 665 nm [1, 2]. Upon excitation of Yb~(3+) ions in doubly Tm~(3+)-Yb~(3+), Er~(3+)-Yb~(3+) and Ho~(3+)-Yb~(3+) doped glasses or vitroceramiscs. Auzel et al. have studied the upconversion processes and the energy transfer mechanisms between these ions upon infrared ecitation [3]. Auzel concluded that the blue upconverted emission from STm~(3+) ions is due to three photon absorption processes by sequential energy transfer from Yb~(3+) to different excited levels of Tm~(3+) ions. Recently the quantitative measurement of upconversion-pumped luminescence efficiency in some rare-earth doped hosts was reported [4].
