When attempting to cast sharp comers, the wetting behavior of liquid metal in a mold will greatly affect the extent to which the corner will be filled. The contact angle, mold material, surface roughness, and applied pressure can alter the wetting behavior of the liquid metal. An analytical model was developed to predict the filling of sharp comers by a non-wetting liquid as a function of contact angle, comer angle, head height, and surface roughness. The effects of applied pressure on the final shape of the metal in the comers of various feature sizes and angles was investigated. The results from these predictions will help improve the casting of sharp comers, allowing more intricate turbine component designs.
