Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines are being considered as a future alternative for conventional engines, because they have a great potential to reduce NOx emission and maintain low PM emission of engines, while achieving higher thermal efficiency compared with SI engines. But, they also pose their own problems: high hydrocarbon and CO emissions and difficulties in control combustion process. In this paper, the HCCI engine is achieved by directly injecting diesel fuel into cylinder near the TDC position of exhaust stroke, which is very early compared with the fuel injection timing of conventional diesel engine. The effects of engine load, inlet air temperature, valve overlap and EGR on HCCI engine were studied. When the engine load or inlet air temperature increases, the start of combustion is advanced; inert gases contained in the EGR can delay the auto-ignition time; larger negative valve overlap also advance the combustion. Larger negative valve overlap can benefit fuel vaporization and make the smoke emission decreased. Larger EGR can slow the combustion rate and control the combustion process.
