This paper will present highlights from research conducted at the University of Liverpool to develop high-fidelitysimulations of the disturbed airwake, or "burble", experienced behind large aircraft carriers. This research will ultimatelycontribute to the simulation of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft from the UK's new Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) carriers.The airflow over and around the superstructure of an aircraft carrier creates an airwake, or "burble", behind the ship thatcan significantly influence pilot workload and aircraft handling qualities during approach and landing. The developmentand application of high-fidelity ship airwake models is not a new concept, having been applied previously to varioussmall single-spot ships. For example, the University of Liverpool has extensive experience of applying ComputationalFluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques to simulate rotary-wing operations to frigate and destroyer sized ships. However,these same techniques have rarely been employed to develop accurate airwake models for large, multi-spot, vessels.The primary challenges associated with applying these techniques to large carriers is an order of magnitude increase inthe domain size and computational grid density, and the integration of the data into a real-time simulation environment.Nevertheless, such models could prove invaluable during preparation for First-of-Class Flight Trials, which is theprocess used to provide an initial operating envelope for aircraft operating from the deck of the carrier, or for enhancingexisting pilot training simulators.
