A relatively new Fitness for Service Standard has been issued - API 579. This paper provides some practical application examples where these rules have been simplified and/or adjusted to address more practically some common problems. The cookbook approach of the rules sometimes makes them rather complex to apply, and/or overly conservative for specific circumstances. Through knowledgeable application and interpretation of the rules, simple tools can be developed to perform fitness-for-service evaluations of components effectively and efficiently.
