Initial inspection techniques to monitor onset of creep in primary reformer tubes proved to be time consuming and inaccurate. A tube crawler technique using a combination of continuous measurements of the tube outer diameter, together with continuous eddy current examination of the tube wall was used to evaluate tube condition in two primary reformers during a schedule outage. Rigorous metallurgical examination was performed on 27 tubes removed from one of the reformers which had been adjudged to be in an abnormal stage of creep deterioration, in order to check the degree of correlation of defect severity and location. The accuracy of this technique was validated with a high degree of confidence, and some conclusions were drawn relating to the geographical location of the defects in relation to burner location.
