During design and plant operation, assessments of optimum reliability and safe component/system behaviour, is essential. This is particularly true when plant operates under conditions of creep or other material deteriorating processes. The problems involved are difficult, multi-variable and uncertain. Under those constraints, Codes of Practice present approximate methods for plant assessments, which need to be supplemented with experience of operating staff. This state of affairs can lead to assessments in which wrong decisions and actions of over-conservatism or over-optimism can arise. The paper examines some of the bases upon which common methods for assessment of crack propensity, deformation and rupture at high temperature depend, Comments are offered which caution the use of large-scale computer programs, without allowing for deterioration of material stiffness and residual strength; this can also lead to over-optimistic results. Continuum damage mechanics results are now mature enough to avoid these omissions.
