A high temperature code under development in Europe is primarily aimed at guidelines for remnant life assessment. This code is expected to be of use at design stages provided that postulated defects are analysed. Ageing plant where remnant life assessments and fitness for service certification are to be established, will be included in the code. This paper concentrates on aspects of the code which will deal with structural design, failure criteria and the significance of defects in components under creep conditions. The influence of fatigue and of onsets of brittle or ductile fracture in determining tolerable defect size is also considered.
