Rockbolting is essential for providing roof support in mining operations, particularly in deeper operations where strain is greater. Smartbolt technology utilises steel compositions that change from a non-magnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase as the material undergoes straining. Peak strain levels experienced in the material correspond directly with the percentage of ferromagnetism, hence monitoring the relative amount of ferromagnetic content will indicate the level of strain obtained. The smartbolt acts as a sensor and strain levels can be monitored using a portable magnetic probe instrument. To verify the technology, underground trials have been performed at several mines in which bolts have been monitored over a period of several months. Results are discussed in the context of the mining industry's needs.
