In this paper, a new fast fractal image coding algorithm based on variance is proposed. Theoretical analysis and experimental tests have shown that the iteration times in decoding process are reduced significantly. Superior coding performance is confirmed by the experimental results. Comparing with the conventional fractal coding method, we recorded a 70% acceleration factor without any degradation of PSNR.
