The paper discusses the results of a stability analysis carried out in a mining area that has been considered for the disposal of the slag produced in a nearby smelter. Although the site is suitable for this purpose owing to the presence of an abandoned pit having a potential storage volume of about 1.5 million tonnes, some risks of potential instability have been identified, related to the steepness of the pit slope, often consisting of poor and weathered rocks and to the presence underground openings below. The vertical displacement of the fill layer to be placed inside the pit for the sake of bottom and walls shaping represents a further problem. The stability has been assessed through the limit equilibrium and stress-strain analyses. The possibility of increasing the safety conditions and safeguarding the integrity of the landfill barrier system has been proved through an iterative check of landfill design in face of the results of stability analysis. The implementation of numerical computer models showed that the critical aspects are the shear and the bulk modulus of the backfill material. A special attention has also been devoted to the subsidence history of underground openings and to the predictable displacement of the loose materials involved (backfill, shaping and barrier layers, disposed of slag).
