For developed as well as developing countries, mining of minerals to sustain national development is of paramount importance. As per Kautilya, "minerals are treasure of the nation". India has unique blend of big and small, manual and mechanized, opencast and underground mines. Goa is one of the major iron ore producing states in the country. All the deposits in Goa are worked by opencast mining methods. In process of winning these huge quantity of iron ore from the mines, about double of this quantity of waste are generated and all these wastes are piling up in and around the mining pits covering a vast stretches of land. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. An efficient engineering design of spoil dumps aims to ensure the long term stability of the dumps at the end of the construction. This paper presents the analysis of the industrial survey carried out on Goan spoil dump management practices and their design, construction and rehabilitation.
