Greenhouse growth trials of perennial ryegrass in coalmine spoils

As part of a European Union research programme on the rehabilitation of coal tips, a greenhouse growth trial was carried out with samples of spoil from two tips in Germany. Perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne cv Prohpet was sown in 1 kg spoil samples of particle size - 6.7 + 2.3 mm, with and without addition of ammonium nitrate and calcium phosphate in a greenhouse at 23℃, with 19 hours light per day for 39 days. Potash was expected to be available in the spoil. Nutrient uptake, growth height and root penetration were examined. From the results, all the plants grew and took up N, P and K although differently according to the fertilizer present and the particular spoil characteristics. It was found that the roots adhered to the surface of the spoil and penetrated into cracks. From height measurements, correlation was observed between potassium uptake from the spoil and plant growth.
